President and Founder

Jeff Hughes has a broad-based background in the oil and gas industry that encompasses both domestic and international exploration, operations and project management. Since founding HTK in 1991, he has successfully assisted several small independents in Houston start up their operations along the Gulf Coast and worked on numerous international ventures that include special projects in Western China, offshore Congo, Trinidad, and Venezuela.

Prior to starting HTK, Jeff served in positions as a drilling superintendent, drilling manager and drilling engineer for several independent oil and gas companies. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Texas and holds a BS in Petroleum Engineering (1976) from Louisiana State University. Jeff is a past President and current Treasurer of the AADE Houston Chapter and past President of the AADE National Chapter. He is also a member of SPE, API, and IADC.

Chief Operating Officer

Rusty Ritz graduated from Texas A&M University in 1989 with a BS in Petroleum Engineering. He started in the drilling industry working for Schlumberger, then Cliffs Drilling on offshore and land drilling rigs in the Gulf Coast area and internationally. In 1996, he began work for a HTK Consultants, Inc. He has been with the company for 20 years and currently serves as Vice President for the company. Over his career as a drilling and completion engineer, he has worked in many locales and for numerous oil and gas operators of varying sizes. He spent the majority of those years working on Gulf of Mexico offshore projects, including deep water and shelf drilling. Most of the offshore work was comprised of conventional well drilling and completion. Over the past several years, with the advent of the unconventional horizontal plays, he worked in a number of areas, including Oklahoma’s Woodford Shale, the Texas panhandle’s Granite Wash, Haynesville Lime prospects in East Texas and in the Eagleford Shale play in South Texas. Internationally, he spent time working in Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil with brief experience on projects in the North Sea and West Africa.

He is an active member of AADE, SPE and the Pipeliners Association of Houston. He served in varying offices for AADE including president and is currently serving as 2nd VP for Houston Chapter.
